Travel

We recommend flying in to Austin Bergstrom International Airport if you are flying. You should plan to arrive by Sunday afternoon and leave no sooner than Friday evening. For getting around town, you'll probably want to rent a car. Our city has some public transport, but it's not top-notch. Our production facility, where class will be held, is not in the center of the coolest parts of Austin. So if you want to explore, a rental car is recommended. You can also use RideAustin, a local non-profit ride share company, as well as Lyft or Uber. There are pay-per-minute scooters and bicycles available in the denser parts of Austin.

Where to Stay?

There are several hotels within a short drive of our facility, but none within easy walking distance. Look for something in the 78757 zipcode. There is a range of price and luxury, we will leave it to each of you to choose what amenities matter most.

Other options are renting a room or home through AirBnB or VRBO. This is a popular option in Austin, and you are more likely to find a place close to the production facility. Please let us know your experiences after the course! Some students from our November 2018 session stayed at an AirBnB at 7800 Northcrest Blvd #203, and would recommend it to others.

What to pack?

Weather is unpredictable in winter in Austin. It is likely to be cool and may be rainy. Conversely, it may be hot and sunny. Pack layers and options. In the kitchen, please wear close-toed shoes that are comfortable for standing in. You'll also want to pack clothes that you don't mind spilling ice cream on. We'll provide aprons and hair nets or bandanas; you are also welcome to bring your own hat or headscarf to keep hair pulled back. No sleeveless shirts please.

We’ll provide you with a 75+ page manual that you may take notes in. You may also want to bring a notebook to make notes in. We will have some time for you to work on a laptop if you wish, but it is not necessary for the class.

All meals provided through Cool School will be vegan with gluten-free options. We'll be having our welcome dinner at 7:00 pm on Sunday at our production facility on Burnet Road so we can all meet each other and see the kitchen. This meal, happy hour burgers on Friday, and 5 lunches throughout the week are included in your tuition. All other meals are up to you. We'll give you a list of the best vegan and vegan-friendly places in town for you to explore throughout the week. Our goodbye happy hour Friday afternoon will be at The Grackle on East 6th street, a bar with Arlo’s vegan burger truck parked in the yard.
